What Is Life Coaching?
Forget what you know about life coaching. It’s not some motivational speaker yelling at you to get over your fears or a lady with crystals telling you how to cleanse your aura or a snake oil of any kind.
Life coaching is proven methodology that helps smart, successful people go from functional to optimal in some aspect of their lives. What would it be like if your dating life was “optimal”?
How does coaching work?
The coaching school where Holly was certified, the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), defines life coaching as a process that helps bring out the client’s potential, the client being a person, couple, family, or corporation. The life coach helps the client emotionally connect his or her inner purpose and passion to outer goals and strategies for extraordinary and sustainable results.
How does the life coach do this? By asking the client open-ended, empowering questions that help elevate the client’s energy level to not just a “can do” attitude, but a “will do” attitude. The life coach helps the client get from “I can be” to “I am.” The life coach helps the client remove mental roadblocks to success—gremlins (that “I’m not good enough” message), assumptions, interpretations, and limiting beliefs (GAILs)—so no challenge or goal is unmet.
What makes coaching different?
There’s therapy, which digs into a person’s past and elevates that person out of dysfunction. There’s mentoring, where a role model shows someone the ropes. There’s consulting, where a client presents a problem to an expert and the expert returns with solutions. And there’s life coaching, a process that understands that the client is the expert on his or her life.
The process is spiritual, like Buddhism. The process is Socratic, where big questions lead to breakthroughs. And the process is what the great interpersonal communication expert and How to Win Friends and Influence People author Dale Carnegie said: make it about the other person. In life coaching, it’s all about you.
How can coaching help me?
In a world of bad advice and sexism, certified dating coach Holly Shaftel helps millennial STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) women who feel lost at sea in their dating lives. This means bushwhacking through the ineffective advice and sexist bullshit out there that the media perpetuates. This means helping every smart, successful, and fiercely independent STEM woman out there until she no longer needs help.
